(A) Except as otherwise provided in this article, driveways on single family residential sites shall be constructed of poured concrete or other approved alternative paving material or hard surface pervious material extending from the public sidewalk or lot line to the overhead garage doors of all garages where there is an existing garage or where a garage is proposed to be constructed, or to the front building line where no garage exists or is proposed to be constructed. At a minimum, the driveway and driveway approach shall be constructed of materials approved by the Office of Building, with the base materials compacted to 95% compaction. Any hard surface driveway and driveway approach shall be installed and maintained to provide adequate drainage. The compacted soil or base shall be inspected and approved by the Office of Building prior to installation of the poured concrete, alternative paving material, or hard surface pervious material. The driveway shall be reinforced over all excavated areas, and shall have expansion paper where the driveway meets the sidewalk and the hard surface garage floor. If a concrete driveway is parallel with and abutting a building, an expansion paper shall be installed to separate the driveway from the building or foundation. A control joint shall be installed for every ten feet by ten feet square. Driveway flares shall be installed as required by the Engineering Standards of the Office of Engineering.
(B) Access from a second garage to a public or private street will not be permitted from an unpaved surface but shall be from the paved driveway required for the first garage or from a separate driveway meeting the requirements of subsection (A) of this section.
(C) Where paving is proposed in the side yard to less than 18 inches from the property line, run off shall be contained within the property by reverse pitch of one and one-half inches curb to prevent water, road salts or other substances from entering onto the adjoining property.
(D) Driveway extension strips may be installed along either or both edges of a poured concrete driveway or driveway approach provided that they extend the length of the driveway and/or driveway approach and do not exceed three feet in width on either side of the driveway or driveway approach. Such driveway extension strips may be constructed of (i) the same material as the driveway, (ii) an alternative paving material, or (iii) an approved hard surface pervious material. The area of any driveway extension strips shall be included in determining compliance with the maximum impervious material and hard surface pervious material coverage limitations set forth in the Zoning Ordinance. The parking of vehicles shall not be permitted on the driveway extension strips. Driveway extension strips shall not be constructed on a public sidewalk or other non-motorized pathway.
(E) All public sidewalks and driveway approaches shall be constructed of poured concrete meeting the Engineering Standards of the Office of Engineering.
